My faith has always been a huge part of my life and something that affect who I am personally and every action I take. Big break was a once in a life-time experience to go out and proclaim my faith to the world, but also very nerve racking. I didn't really know what to expect or if I should really go since I've never really done something like this and it is a huge commitment since it's over your whole spring break.
It ended up being one of the best decisions I made that semester. I had the most amazing time and learned so much over the past week. I became more confident in who I was and what I believe and become bolder in telling and sharing what my beliefs are and starting spiritual conversations with others people on the beach as well as in different schools. It was so amazing to hear different people’s outlook and take on religion and why they believe what they believe or how they started believing and their view of the intuition of religion is.
One of the most important things I learned is to not let fear hinder me from talking with others and being myself. This quote by Soledad O’Brien describes what I learned perfectly, “I've learned that fear limits you and your vision. It serves as blinders to what may be just a few steps down the road for you. The journey is valuable, but believing in your talents, your abilities, and your self-worth can empower you to walk down an even brighter path. Transforming fear into freedom - how great is that?”
Sharing my faith was an avenue to face some deep fears that was holding me back from being myself and being the best person I could be. This trip taught me to face my fear of rejection or being ridiculed or rejected head on and it was amazing. I was shocked about how open people were and how once I put myself out there how responsive people were. Rarely anyone rejected us or turned us away, the people who did mostly already had someone approach and come up to them, it was such a great feeling to know that and see that taking a leap of faith can reap amazing outcomes.
Taking leaps of faith and trusting that all will end well is something I think a lot of people struggle with. Taking that leap despite being afraid, and moving away from your comfort zone is something I believe everyone should be doing on a daily basis. It could be small things like trying a new restaurant instead of going to the same one and ordering the same thing that usual or something bigger as in traveling abroad to changing your major. The most important thing is that you try and you give it your best shot, because of you don’t the only thing you will have are regrets and would have and could have. Things may not wind up the way you hoped that it would, but looking back you can’t say that you didn’t step out of your comfort zone and you tried. That is the most important and the biggest takeaway I had on this trip.
